ANGELOGRAPHIA,

Or, A Discourse Concerning the Nature and Power of the Holy Angels, and the Great Benefit which the True Fearers of God Receive by their Ministry: Delivered in several Sermons: To which is added, A Sermon concerning the Sin and Misery of the Fallen Angels.

ANNALS OF ENGLISH PRESBYTERY

From the Earliest Period to the Present Time.

M’Crie, Thomas (Emer. Professor of the English Presbyterian College, London.)

  • (1872: James Nisbet & Co.)
  • 336 pages – 18mb — $0.90

"It is not the author's object to vindicate 'presbyterianism' as a form of church-government, in distinction from episcopacy or independency. He prefers the term 'presbytery,' in order to embrace all who have distinguished themselves by their adherence to primitive christianity and to the principles of the Reformation in England, including the saints, bishops, and martyrs of the olden time, without meaning to assert that they were all, in the modern sense, presbyterians.... In regard to the form which these Annals have assumed, the author is anxious to disclaim the idea of furnishing a complete or connected history.... [They] consist mainly of biographical sketches and illustrations.... In the statement of facts, his narrative will be found strictly impartial and well authenticated." (From the Preface)

"Dr. M'Crie—elarum et venerabile nomen,—the honored son of an honored sire,—has made the Christian world his debtor by the timely publication of these intersting Annals. Though disclaiming any higher character for his work than that of popular sketches, the amount of valuable matter contained therein will secure for it a permanent place in ecclesiastical literature." (Arnold W. Miller in The Southern Presbyterian Review, Vol. 23: No. 4, October 1872.)

ATONEMENT, THE

Hodge, Archibald Alexander (Professor, Princeton Theological Seminary.)

  • (1867: 1907, Presbyterian Board of Publication, and Sabbath School Work.)
  • 453 pages — 23mb — $1.15

A complete Scripture Index is appended to this edition.

C. H. Spurgeon’s high endorsement of Hodge’s Outlines of Theology includes the 25 pages which comprise Chapter 25 on "The Atonement: Its Nature, Necessity, Perfection, and Extent." This volume is an expansion of those pages and a masterful unfolding of the doctrine. Ralph G. Turnbull describes it succinctly. "The Atonement . . . has in it the intellectual height, the spiritual depth, and the breadth of knowledge of an acute mind. Unveiled are the many facets of this timeless doctrine. At the same time we sense the throb of a man who has faith and trust in the Christ of the Cross. . . . The author is a confident guide to the uninformed who know little of this field of study. Scripture is searched for its revelation, historical studies are scrutinized for light by others, theories are examined with open mind, and a frank confession of the author's position is set forth. . . . Hodge's acute mind, power of analysis, and clear style bring fresh insights into focus, for our stimulus and profit."

DIVINE UNITY OF SCRIPTURE, THE

Saphir, Adolph

  • (1895: Fleming H. Revell Company, N. Y., Chicago, Toronto.)
  • 313 pages — 22mb — $1.10

"These lectures of Dr. Saphir were delivered in Kensington at the close of 1888 and beginning of 1889. They are, in some respects, the most important of all his writings, as they give, in connected form, his matured views of the relation of the two great divisions of the Bible. No preacher or writer of our day had such a clear insight into the spirit and connection of the sacred writings.... These lectures are better than directly controversial. Indirectly,—as, for instance, in meeting the attempt to weaken the authority of Christ's testimony to the ancient scriptures,—they seriously affect the position of recent assailants of the antiquity and authenticity of the books of Moses and the prophets. They bring out also such an organic connection between the Pentateuch, as the basis, and the books which follow, and also between the histories, psalms, and prophecies themselves, as to render the attempt to revolutionise the times and order exceedingly difficult.... Dr. Saphir had these lectures carefully written out by a well-known reporter, which was his usual method, and was preparing them for the press when he was so suddenly and unexpectedly removed from the earthly scene. They are published—with, of course, corrections for the press—just as he left them." (From the Preface by G. Carlyle.)

DIVINITY OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST, THE

Liddon, Henry Parry (Canon Residentiary of St. Paul's, and Late Ireland Professor at Oxford.)

  • (1867; 1885: Rivingtons, London.)
  • 615 pages — 45mb — $2.25

Eight Lectures Preached before the University of Oxford in the Year 1866 on the Foundation of the Late Rev. John Bampton, M. A. Canon of Salisbury.

"As a specimen of English style the work is a masterpiece; and in few other books are the beauty and majesty of the personality of the Lord so eloquently and impressively displayed. A great chain of cumulative reasoning, based for the most part upon the Word of God, demonstrating that our Lord is the brightness of His Father's glory, and the express image of His person, 'the Son of the Living God.' When modernism is rearing its head today with such audacity, it is more than ever necessary to stand for the truth. Let the reader, be he preacher or student, master this treatise and he is in a position to deal with the enemy in the gate." (Flyleaf of abridged reprint.)

"In 1866, when Liddon was not yet forty years of age, he delivered his famous Bampton Lectures...upon a very short notice because of the sudden illness of the one who had previously been appointed for this year. This is without doubt the greatest of all the Bampton Lectures of that generation, and my own opinion would be that it is one of the ten most notable books on the Deity of Christ that appeared in the nineteenth century, full of learning, and fervor, with a glowing love for the Lord Jesus and almost irresistible logic.... Liddon's love for the Bible and his constant defense of its divine origin gave to his messages an authority which those of weaker convictions could not command." (Wilbur M. Smith, Great Sermons on the Birth of Christ; 1963)

DOCTRINE OF JUSTIFICATION, THE

DOCTRINE OF THE HIGHER CHRISTIAN LIFE COMPARED WITH THE TEACHING OF THE HOLY SCRIPTURES, THE

Hovey, Alvah

  • (1876: Henry A. Young & Co., Boston.)
  • 145 pages — 5mb — $0.25

"Much the larger part of this examination was published in 'The Journal and Messenger' in 1873, and also read before the Massachusetts Baptist Ministers' Institute in 1874. Since then, the writer has been asked more than once to give the discussion a permanent form; and there seems to be some reason for doing this, in the circumstance that the doctrine examined is said to be gaining adherents among the people. If this be so, it should be closely studied in the light of God's Word; and the following pages may perhaps furnish assistance to Christians in seeking to ascertain the meaning of certain passages of Scripture which are appealed to in proof of a 'second conversion' and a consequent 'higher Christian life.' They may be called Biblical studies with reference to a particular theory of the method of divine grace, and are committed to the reader in the hope that he will find them useful." (Author's Preface.)

An excellent companion to H. A. Boardman's The "Higher Life" Doctrine of Sanctification, Tried by the Word of God and J. C. Ryle's Holiness, by a leading 19th century American Baptist. Hovey deals with Wesleyan "perfectionism" which developed into the modern "deeper life," "victorious life," "higher life," Keswickian, etc., views of the Christian life by subjecting it to a close scrutiny with the Holy Scripture.—The doctrine discussed by Hovey is but an offshoot of mysticism, described by D'Aubigne as a ". . . sad disease of the noblest minds! . . . which unprofitably consumes the souls of those who become its victims." (History of the Reformation, Vol. 1, pp. 172-3.)

M’Laurin, John (Of Glasgow.)

  • (1755; 18--: Presbyterian Board of Publication, Philadelphia.)
  • 295 pages — 21mb — $1.05

"After the death of Thomas Halyburton in 1712, perhaps the finest mind of the Church of Scotland in the first half of the eighteenth century was that of John Maclaurin.... In many respects Maclaurin resembled [Jonathan] Edwards [with whom he corresponded and encouraged]. Both were men of profound intellect and of equally profound spirituality. Maclaurin had indeed been spoken of as the Bishop Butler of the Scottish Church. His massive powers were like those of his two great contemporaries.... The third in the succession of the three John Browns edited and prefaced a volume of Maclaurin's Essays and Sermons and recognized in him 'the most profound and eloquent Scottish theologian of the eighteenth century.' ... The discourse on Glorying in the Cross of Christ has been often printed and much admired. Dr. R. S. Candlish spoke of it in glowing terms as the finest evangelical sermon that he knew.... For the serious reader who will patiently think out his thoughts there are scarcely any names on our Roll of Honour that stand higher than his." (John McLeod in Some Favourite Books, "The Works of John Maclaurin.")

EVIDENCES OF THE AUTHENTICITY, INSPIRATION AND CANONICAL AUTHORITY OF THE HOLY SCRIPTURES

  • 309 pages — 26mb — $1.30

A classic and still valuable work on Christian Apologetics.

"Alexander's Evidences went through many editions and was translated into a number of foreign languages." (David B. Calhoun in Princeton Seminary, Vol. 1.; p. 452.)

"When in 1823 a little group of rationalist students became active at Princeton College, Dr. Alexander was invited to answer them in a sermon in the college chapel. He enlarged this sermon into a book, that appeared in 1825 with the title A Brief Outline of the Evidences of the Christian Religion. Besides dealing with the 'evidences' for the authenticity, inspiration, and canonical authority of the Bible, Alexander presented the arguments for Christianity from miracles and prophecy. His book was widely used; and, according to his son, Dr. Alexander received 'innumerable letters from persons converted as well as convinced by his 'Evidences.'" (David B. Calhoun in Princeton Seminary, Vol. 1; p. 89.)

FIGURES OR TYPES OF THE OLD TESTMANET

By which Christ and the Heavenly Things of the Gospel were Preached and Shadowed to the People of God of Old. Explained and Improved in Sundry Sermons.

Mather, Samuel (Sometime Pastor of a Church in Dublin.)

  • (1705: Nath. Hillier, London.)
  • 564 pages – 60mb — $3.00

The Second Edition to which is Annexed, (more than was in the former Edition) a Scheme and Table of the whole, whereby the Reader may readily turn to any Subject treated of in this Book.

The author was pastor of a Church in Dublin, Ireland; son of Richard Mather; brother of Increase Mather; uncle of Cotton Mather.

The Puritan classic on Scripture Typology—thoroughly evangelical, reverent and insightful. It is undergirded by a sane biblical hermeneutic: "Men must not indulge their own Fancies, as the Popish Writers use to do, with their Allegorical Senses, as they call them; except we have some Scripture ground for it. It is not safe to make any thing a Type meerly upon our own fansies and imaginations; it is God's Prerogative to make Types" (p. 55). Many spiritual gems are contained herein!

"Though this is a work upon all the types, it contains . . . much instructive matter upon the Levitical sacrifices. . . . It is one of the old standard books of our fathers." (C. H. Spurgeon in Commenting and Commentaries.)

INFANT-BAPTISM HISTORICALLY CONSIDERED

McGlothlin, William Joseph (Professor of Church History, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.)

  • (1916; Sunday School Board, Southern Baptist Convention, Nashville.)
  • 175 pages – 8mb — $0.40

"Prof. McGlothlin has traced the development of infant baptism throughout Christian history with great clearness in the pages of this volume. Perhaps no better argument can be offered against the practice than that afforded by the facts of its origin, and the motives which led to its perpetuation. Certainly no pen can adequately describe the evils to which it has given rise in those countries where the logic of infant baptism has had an opportunity to work itself out fully in church life. The fundamental explanation is to be found at every stage in the history. Infant baptism shifts the center of gravity of Christianity so completely that a thorough transformation of church life follows. The direct gives place to an indirect relation of the soul to God; personal faith gives place to proxy profession; the vital inward change or new birth gives place to a fictitious sacramental salvation; a regenerate gives place to an unregenerate church membership. This is the logic of infant baptism, and it is universal experience as well, except where other and opposing principles neutralize the tendency.... It will not be difficult for a fair-minded pedobaptist to understand the motive of a Baptist in maintaining believers’ and opposing infant baptism. It is not as the champion of a form or ceremony merely, it is not as a formalist at all, that he pleads. It is rather as the advocate of an intensely and radically spiritual Christianity, which seeks to reproduce that of the New Testament." (E. Y. Mullins.)

LECTURES ON THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS, AND ON THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JOHN BUNYAN

Cheever, George B.

  • (1844: Wiley and Putnam, New York.)
  • 533 pages — 62mb — $3.10

"A scholar of our own country [America], Dr. Cheever, who has written what both in Britain and in our own land has been held the best commentary on the Pilgrim, has found, if we remember aright, only cause for admiration in the doctrine as well as in the style." (William R. Williams, Lectures on Baptist History.)

A must for the Bunyan lover!—This work on John Bunyan and his immortal allegory is a gem. In the portrayal of the man and his times, and in the handling of the actual themes of the Progress itself, Cheever has few peers. Some of the author's unfounded prejudices lamentably come through from time to time. But as in any meal, lay aside the occasional bone and enjoy the feast!

LETTERS FROM A FATHER TO HIS SONS IN COLLEGE

Miller, Samuel (Professor in the Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey.)

  • (1843: Grigg and Elliott, Philadelphia.)
  • 344 pages — 18mb — $0.90

"To every Parent who has a son in college; and to every Son who is placed in that interesting and responsible situation, this volume is affectionately in-scribed." (From the Dedication.)

"The writer of this volume has had five sons trained and graduated in the College of New Jersey. The following Letters, not, indeed, precisely in their present form, but in substance, were actually addressed to them. There is, probably, not one idea contained in this manual which was not, during their course in that Insti-tution, distinctly communicated to them, either orally or in writing. The influence of these counsels on their minds, it is believed, was not wholly useless. May they prove still more useful when presented in this revised and more public form!" (Advertisement.)

Cuthbert, James Hazzard (Pastor of the First Baptist Church, Washington, D. C.)

  • (1879: Sheldon and Company, New York.)
  • 326 pages – 13mb — $0.65

The author was Fuller's nephew.

Thirty-five years after the death of Dr. Fuller, "this unique man" was still considered "the greatest pulpit orator Southern Baptists, not to say the South, ever had" (George B. Taylor in Virginia Baptist Ministers, 5th Series; 1915; p. 352.)

LIFE OF GEN. ROBERT E. LEE, A

Cooke, John Esten

  • (1871: D. Appleton and Company, New York.)
  • 606 pages — 133mb — $6.65

With Illustrations, Portraits, and Maps.

"Duty is the sublimest word in our language."--"Human virtue should be equal to human calamity."  Lee.

The author’s biographer says, "Among Virginian writers whose careers have come to a close, John Esten Cooke holds a conspicuous place. He is by far the most voluminous, and has exerted great influence on later novelists. His is thoroughly Virginian, and is perhaps second to Poe in the intrinsic importance of his work. . . . Cooke became . . . perhaps the best paid Southern man of letters before 1870."

"The Life of General Robert E. Lee . . . is a narrative of Lee’s campaigns in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. . . . Cooke produced this book rapidly to meet a sudden popular demand, and made use of only such facts as he knew or could discover easily." (John O. Beaty in John Esten Cooke, Virginian; 1922; pp. vii, 22, 107, 108.)

MEMOIRS OF ELDER JESSE MERCER

Mallary, Charles Dutton

  • (1844: John Gray, New York.)
  • 458 pages — 31mb — $1.55

"The following work was undertaken in accordance with the request and appointment of the Baptist State Convention [of Georgia[, at its annual session at Lagrance, in 1842. . . . The volume is not altogether what the Author could have wished. . . . Yet with all its defects, it is hoped that it will be found entertaining to the surviving friends and acquaintances of Mr. Mercer, and not altogether useless to the religious community in general. The work contains some reflections and historical details not absolutely necessary to illustrate the life and character of Mr. Mercer; yet they generally relate to affairs with which he was more or less connected, and may be in some degree interesting and useful to Southern Baptists, and particularly to the Baptists of Georgia. . . .

"The Biographer would . . . offer up a tribute of thankfulness to the Great Head of the Church, who has enabled him, through manifold infirmities, to press on to the conclusion of his toil, so that he can now present to the Christian public a volume which, notwithstanding all its deficiencies, may tend somewhat, with the divine blessing, to perpetuate the usefulness of one, whose name will ever hold an honored place upon the catalogue of the Wise, the Great, and the Good." (From the Advertisement.)

"Elder Jesse Mercer's commitment to the Doctrines of Grace was doubted by none in the Baptist denomination." (Thomas J. Nettles, By His Grace and For His Glory, p. 167).

OLD AND NEW THEOLOGY

The Doctrinal Differences which have Agitated and Divided the Presbyterian Church.

Wood, James

  • (1838; 1853: Presbyterian Board of Publication, Philadelphia.)
  • 290 pages — 18mb — $0.90

The old is better.—Luke v.39.

Enlarged Edition. Originally published 1838.

12 CHAPTERS; containing: 1. The character and government of God. 2. God's covenant with Adam and our relation to him as our federal head—involving the doctrine of imputation and original sin. 3. The subject of the preceding chapter continued—exhibiting the New Theology concerning God's covenant with Adam as the federal head of his posterity, imputation, original sin, etc. 4. Remarks on imputation, original sin, etc. with reference to the views presented in the preceding chapter. 5. The sufferings of Christ and our justification through Him. 6. Justification—a continuation of the preceding chapter. 7. Human ability, regeneration, and the influences of the Holy Spirit. 8. Human ability, regeneration, etc. continued from the preceding chapter. 9. A contrast between the Old and New Theology, by way of review, and a notice of the Perfectionism of Mr. Finney. 10. The measures adopted by the General Assembly for removing those errors from the Presbyterian Church. 11. The acts of the General Assembly in 1837 and 1838. 12. Present character and condition of the Old and New-School bodies.

The mundane title belies the fact that its proper place is alongside the classic exposés of the unbiblical theology and practices which were imposed upon biblical orthodoxy in the 1830's and beyond. Whatever its designation today: easy-believism, decisional regeneration, evangelical Arminianism, semi-pelagianism, conditional lordshipism, etc.—all found a renewed impetus in the "new theology" of the early-mid 19th century. The man-centered, shallow "gospel" which has developed from it, knows no denominational boundary in the 21st century.—This book is an enthusiastic, biblical and historical restating and defense of the great doctrines of grace.

OLD SOUTH, THE

Essays Social and Political.

Page, Thomas Nelson

  • (1891.)
  • 356 pages – 20mb — $1.00

"The substance of the papers is what the author earnestly believes and what he is satisfied history will establish.—[They] are given to the public in the hope that they may serve to help awaken inquiry into the true history of the Southern people and may aid in dispelling the misapprehension under which the Old South has lain so long." (Preface.)

ON THE DOCTRINES OF GRACE

Pettie, A. S.

  • (1925: Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, Nashville.)
  • 190 pages 15mb — $0.75

"In February, 1925, I had the pleasure of hearing Dr. A. S. Pettie deliver this series of sermons in the Edgefield Baptist Church of this city. I have never heard an abler series of sermons on the Great Doctrines of Grace. It was the unanimous verdict of all who heard that such a series of sermons would do good, if put in permanent form, for the public and especially for young preachers.

"It is my deep conviction that Dr. Pettie has no peer in the Southland as a clear, concise, orthodox Baptist minister. He is a man of profound scholarship, deep convictions and years of ripe experience as a minister of the Word. These messages are well thought out, clearly stated and couched in the choicest language.

"It has been my privilege to minister to a church which Dr. Pettie served for sixteen years as pastor. The foundations for sound thinking, right living and consecrated service were found in this noble church and no one more than he is responsible for such a church and its denominational loyalty. These sermons and others similar to them have made their impress on the souls of men and women for the glory of God.

"No one knowing the author would expect anything but vital orthodoxy from him. This collection of sermons will disappoint no one in that respect. It gives me peculiar pleasure to commend these sound, sensible sermons on the great Doctrines of Grace for what they are and because they come from the brain of one of our great preachers, who is set for the defense and propagation of the gospel.

"It is my prayer that this volume of sermons may continue to stress the great Doctrines of Grace and strengthen all who love the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity of heart, and my fervent wish that the readers of these sermons may be many and that the Word of the Lord as set out here may run and be glorified." (Foreword by W. M. Wood, Pastor Edgefield Baptist Church, Nashville, Tenn.)

PASTORAL LETTER, A

From a Minister in the Country, to those of His Flock Who Remained in the City of Philadelphia During the Pestilence of 1798.

Green, Ashbel (Pastor, Second Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.)

  • (1799: John Ormrod, Philadelphia.)
  • 7 pages –1mb — $0.05

This work has been re-typeset for Strait Gate Publications

"The following Letter was originally written in haste, and intended only for a special occasion; and it is now published as it was written, with the alteration only of a few words. This has been done in compliance with the solicitation of the Author’s Friends, who have expressed it as their opinion, that the publication might do good.—To the consideration of doing good to souls, every other regard ought to be sacrificed by the Ministers of Christ: And, that this desirable end may, in some humble degree, be promoted, by what is here submitted to the eye of the public, is the earnest Prayer of the Author."

PEDOBAPTISM: IS IT FROM HEAVEN OR OF MEN?

Frost, James Marion, Jr. (Pastor of the Pilgrim Baptist Church, Lexington, KY.)

  • (1875: Elm Street Printing Company, Cincinnati.)
  • 199 pages – 6mb — $0.30

"Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye."—Acts iv.19.

"We ought to obey God rather than men."—Acts iv.29.

Authored by one of Southern Baptists' "outstanding writers" and "mature and experienced pastor[s]" who became the first Corresponding Secretary of the Sunday School Board of the the Southern Baptist Convention (1891-1893). He filled that position again from 1896 until his death in 1913—a task to which he dedicated himself fully and executed admirably though "filled with strenuous labors."

"The earnest and prayerful endeavor throughout has been to give the subject a purely practical turn. It has been written in a Christian spirit and for a Christian purpose, and is offered for the kindly consideration of those who differ from the positions taken. First read, and then approve or condemn. . . . The work was designed especially for the masses. . . . And now that it may find its way into the homes and hearts of many, and that, under the gracious influence of the Holy Spirit, the cause of truth may be advanced, while that of error is checked, at least a little, by the contribution of his mite, is the earnest prayer of the author." (Prefatory Note.)

PETER THE APOSTLE

Taylor, William Mackergo (Minister of the Broadway Tabernacle, New York City.)

  • (1876: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, New York.)
  • 372 pages — 21mb — $1.05

"Few have undertaken to set forth in order the incidents and lessons of the history of Peter . . . the Apostle to the Circumcision. . . . As [the author] has prosecuted his work, he has grown in his love of the warm-hearted, impulsive, and often blundering apostle, and in his appreciation of the incalculable service rendered by him to the Church and to the world.

"He has looked at Peter as a brother man, having the same infirmities as the rest of us; and he has sought to bring from his errors, as well as from his excellencies, lessons that may be helpful to Christians generally amidst the trials and temptatiosn of modern life.

"It has been a joy to him to find that he has had to keep close company with the Master, in order to do justice to the disciple; and his prayer is, that every reader may be stimulated and strengthened by his words." (From the Preface.)

QUESTION IN BAPTIST HISTORY, A

Whether the Anabaptists in England Practiced Immersion before the Year 1641?

Whitsitt, William Heth (President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY.)

  • (1896: Chas. T. Dearing, Louisville.)
  • 164 pages – 9mb — $0.45

With an Appendix on the Baptism of Roger Williams, at Providence, R. I., in 1639.

A watershed volume on Baptist history by the third president (1895-1899) of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. The controversy which it created forced his resignation from that institution.—Few publications have caused as much internal interaction between Baptists among themselves. Many know about it, but few have actually seen or read it in the present day.

"After a careful reading of the book, we think it perfectly clear that [Dr. Whitsitt] never meant in any sense to recognize as real Baptists any persons who did not practice immersion; and he never meant to teach that the immersion of believers began at the time which he claims as the date of its reintroduction into England. The sole question which he seems to have had in view as concerning the date at which genuine Baptists first appear in English History." (F. H. Kerfoot, John R. Sampey, A. T. Robertson, E. C. Dargan, W. J. McGlothlin, H. H. Harris, W. O. Carver; SBTS faculty statement, Sept. 29, 1896.)

RECOLLECTIONS OF WILLIAM JAY, OF BATH

With Occasional Glances at some of His Contemporaries and Friends. By his Son.

Jay, Cyrus

  • (1859: Hamilton, Adams and Co., London.)
  • 388 pages — 24mb — $1.20

"This volume is partly intended as a supplement to the Autobiography of my late father, . . . a work published some months after his decease by his literary executors. . . . Shortly after the publication of the Autobiography, many . . . expressed a desire that some account should be sent forth to the world of the personal and domestic habits of a man who had been so long before the public both as a preacher and an author."—This volume is an admiring son's attempt to supply that request.

"Judged by any standard, William Jay of Bath certainly belongs to the front rank of preachers of the past.""There is a . . . group of ministers of the past whose biographies we both can and we must study because they contain information which is calculated to be of outstanding help to ministers of the Gospel in all ages. . . . His influence as a preacher: for all around usefulness, he was for nearly half a century one of the best known preachers in England; and as to his public volumes he was possibly the most widely read of them all. His books sold even more widely in the United States.""C. H. Spurgeon prized the memory of hearing Jay preach in Cambridge in 1851. And he later urged Jay's writings upon the attention of all his students who trained at the Pastor's College.""William Williams was a student at the College and he says, 'Jay of Bath was ever a great favourite with Spurgeon. He often read a chapter or two from Jay in College and advised each student to get his works.'" (Iain Murray, "William Jay and the Art of Preaching;" from a recording.)

ROTATION IN THE PASTORAL RELATION

Humphrey, Heman (President of Amherst College.)

  • (18--: Doctrinal Tract and Book Society, Boston.)
  • 17 pages — 1mb — $0.05

Extracted from Tracts of the Doctrinal Tract and Book Society, Vol. 2.

A thought-provoking discussion of a subject that should be of primary interest to churches and pastors. Lamenting the frequency with which pastoral changes had become by the mid 19th century in most evangelical denominations, Dr. Humphrey's keen insight, wisdom and suggestions concerning its causes, indications, dangers and remedies are valuable to all who wish to take the ministry of the local church seriously today. It should be included on the required reading list of every course on Pastoral Theology and Ecclesiology.

Dr. Humphrey was himself a successful pastor for many years and was responsible for the education of hundreds of evangelical ministers of the Gospel as president of Amherst College in Massachusetts. He authored the invaluable Revival Sketches and Manual (1859) which was reprinted in 1999 by Sprinkle Publications, Harrisonburg, VA.

RUTH THE GLEANER AND ESTHER THE QUEEN

Taylor, William Mackergo (Pastor of Broadway Tabernacle, New York.)

  • (1891: Harper & Brothers, New York.)
  • 274 pages — 14mb — $0.70

"The present work will be found to possess the same characteristics as those already issued, its only peculiarity being that it deals with two women whose names are dear to the hearts alike of Jews and Christians. I have put them together into one volume mainly for the sake of convenience; though there is a certain link of association between them, inasmuch as the Book of Ruth describes the experiences of a Gentile widow in the midst of Jewish surroundings; and the Book of Esther describes those of a Jewish orphan in a Gentile city.

". . . They are given to the press in the hope that they may contribute to the promotion of that revival of Biblical Study which, during recent years, has been so gratifying to every lover of the Scriptures.

"That He without Whose blessing all human efforts must be in vain may deign to use these pages for the advancement of His glory in the temporal and spiritual welfare of man is 'my heart's desire and prayer.'" (From the author's Preface.)

SCHOOL HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES

Jones, John William (Former Chaplain in Army of Northern Virginia. Late Chaplain University of Virginia. Chaplain-General United Confederate Veterans.)

  • (1896: R. H. Woodward Company; 1901: University Publishing Company, New York and New Orleans.)
  • 489 pages – 207mb — $10.35

Revised Edition. Illustrated.

Author Personal Reminiscences of R. E. Lee, Christ in the Camp, Davis Memorial Volume; former Secretary Southern Historical Society, and Editor of 14 Volumes Southern Historical Society Papers, etc.

This is genuinely a "Christian" history of the United States, i.e., from a Christian world view. Highly recommended for home schoolers and anyone who desires a reliable record of America from colonial times to the beginning of the 20th century!

"For many years I have been solicited to write a School History of the United States which, while fair to all sections, would do full justice to the Southern States.... For some twenty years I have been collecting material and preparing myself for the task, studying earnestly not only the best of the current histories, but original sources of information as well, and diligently seeking to reach the exact truth on all disputed points.... I have tried to avoid sectional and partisan bias, and to do justice to all sections of our common country; but writing as a Southerner, and for Southern schools, I have treated more fully than I have seen elsewhere many matters of especial interest to the South. It ought, however, to be added that I have not, so far as I am aware, made a single statement which cannot be verified and substantiated by the strongest proofs. . . . With a full sense of the responsibility involved in publishing a history of our wonderful country for the study of our youth, with the earnest hope that it may prove acceptable, and with the fervent prayer that it may be useful in training future citizens of our great Republic, I send it forth on its mission."

THEOPNEUSTIA

The Plenary Inspiration of the Holy Scriptures. Deduced from Internal Evidence, and the Testimonies of Nature, History and Science.

Gaussen, François Samuel Louis (Professor of SystematicTheology, Oratoire, Geneva.)

  • 1841: Edinburgh.)
  • 384 pages — 28mb — $1.40

David Scott's translation.

"A classic defense of the conservative view and authority of the Scriptures. Contains a valuable subject index." (Cyril J. Barber.)

"The turning-point of the battle between those who hold 'the faith once delivered to the saints,' and their opponents, lies in the true and real inspiration of the Holy Scriptures. This is the Thermopylæ of Christendom. If we have in the Word of God no infallible standard of truth, we are at sea without a compass, and no danger from rough weather without can be equal to this loss within. 'If the foundations be removed, what can the righteous do?' and this is a foundation loss of the worst kind.—In this work the author proves himself a master of holy argument. Gaussen charms us as he proclaims the Divine veracity of Scripture. His testimony is clear as a bell." (C. H. Spurgeon.)

"The milestones on my spiritual pathway have been marked by certain books I have read, and one that stands out in my memory more than any other is Gaussen's great work, The Plenary Inspiration of the Scriptures. The day it came into my hands as a young minister just beginning his work marks an epoch, and I speak from experience when I say that a Christian who reads and studies it need never again be troubled by attacks on the Word of God." (James M. Gray, late Dean of The Moody Bible Institute.)

Addressed Particularly to Candidates for the Ministry.

Miller, Samuel (Professor in the Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey.)

  • (1841: Presbyterian Board of Publication, Philadelphia.)
  • 119 pages — 5mb — $0.25

"The growing anti-confessional spirit in American Protestantism was brought close to home for Miller. In 1824 the Reverend John Duncan, a Presbyterian pastor from Baltimore, was elected a director of Princeton Seminary. On the day that he took his seat, Duncan preached a sermon before the board, faculty, and students in which he attacked creeds and confessions. Miller responded by giving the introductory lecture at the opening of the summer session on 'The Utility and Importance of Creeds and Confessions.' . . . The subject of his lecture [was] the importance of creeds and confessions for maintaining the unity and purity of the visible church. . . . He answered a number of objections commonly brought against creeds—including the charges that they supersede the Bible, interfere with the rights of conscience, and are devisive, etc." (David B. Calhoun in Princeton Seminary, Vol. 1: "Faith and Learning 1812-1868"; 1994; p.181.)

WEARING OF THE GRAY

Being Personal Portraits, Scenes and Adventures of the War.

Cooke, John Esten (Formerly of General Stuart's Staff and Author of "Surry of Eagle's Nest," "Stonewall Jackson," Etc.)

  • (1867: E. B. Treat & Co., New York.)
  • 590 pages — 76mb — $3.80

"To the Illustrious Memory of Major-General J. E. B. Stuart, 'Flower of Cavaliers,' This Book is Dedicated by an Old Member of His Staff, Who loved him living, And mourns him dead." (Dedication.)

Through the eyes of one of JEB Stuart's staff members, one meets with many of the leading per-sonalities, colorful characters and interesting events associated with the Army of Northern Virginia in the Southern Confederacy. Cooke was a leading Southern writer during the 19th century; his popularity continues wher-ever his works are read.

"Cooke’s writing was . . . of a threefold nature. He might devote himself to the history of the period, he might record anecdotes and personal reminiscences, or he might use his experience as the basis of fiction. . . . The same material served . . . as the basis for Cooke’s numerous periodical articles, the best of which he collected into volume form under the titles Wearing of the Gray and Hammer and Rapier." (John O. Beaty in John Esten Cooke, Virginian; 1922; pp. vii, 86, 87.)

WONDERS OF BIBLE CHRONOLOGY, THE

Mauro, Philip

  • (1922; 1933.)
  • 117 pages — 8mb — $0.40

This is a revised condensation of Anstey's much larger, more cumbersome work.

A Scripture Index has been added to this revised edition. Also, a copy of the author's autographed presentation note is included.

"It is not the least of the wonders of the Sacred Volume that, embedded in the text thereof, is a continuous line of dated episodes, which begins with the creation of Adam and reaches across forty centuries of time even to the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the coming of the Holy Spirit. . . . The chronology of the Bible, in contrast with all other chronologies, has certain distinctive and unique features which are of a naurte so remarkable as to be worthily called 'wonderful.'

"The very existence of such a chronological and genealogical line is itself a wonder of high import; for it is absolutely unique. There is not another such line, either in the Bible itself or in the extant literature of any nation. . . .

"For reasons concerning which it were idle to speculate, God has been pleased to reveal His Mind and Purpose for humanity in connection with a line of events arranged in chronological relations, each with its immediate predecessor and successor, in such manner as to form a connected chain four thousand years long. This is what chiefly invests the chronology of the Bible with its exceptional interest and value. But apart from this; it is the author's purpose to supply, in a convenient form adapted to the use of all students and readers, a complete tabulation of the dated events of the Bible." (From the Preface to Revised Edition.)

WORDS AND MIND OF JESUS, THE; and FAITHFUL PROMISER, THE

Macduff, John Ross

  • (1849; nd.)
  • 311 pages — 11mb — $0.55

New Edition.

3 separate titles bound into 1 volume.

93 excellent devotional and biblically experimental meditations from 3 sources.

The Words of Jesus "are selected more especially as ‘Words for the weary’–healing leaves for the wounded spirit falling from the Tree of Life. Jesus was divinely qualified for the special office of speaking ‘many and comfortable words.’... Reader, seek to realize, in meditating on them, the simple but solemn truth–‘Christ speaks to me!’ Surely nothing can be more soothing with which to close your eyes on your nightly pillow, than–‘A WORD OF JESUS.’"

The Mind of Jesus. "‘We have the mind of Christ!’... We must never, indeed, forget that it is not the mind, but the work of Immanuel which lies at the foundation of a sinner’s hope. He must be known as a Saviour, before He is studied as an Example. His doing and dying is the centre jewel, of which all the virtues of His holy life are merely the setting. But neither must we overlook the Scripture obligation to walk in His footsteps and imbibe His spirit, for ‘if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His!’—Oh, that each individual Christian were more Saviour-like! that, in the manifestation of a holy character and heavenly demeanor, it might be said in some feeble measure of the faint and imperfect reflection–‘Such was Jesus!’ "

The Faithful Promiser. "‘All the promises of God in Him are Yea, and in Him Amen.’ The following are a few gleanings from the Promise Treasury,–a few crumbs from ‘the Master’s Table,’ which may serve to help the thoughts in the hour of cloest meditation, or the season of sorrow."
